UKPC Press Release - APPC reaffirms its support for UK Public Affairs Council

The Association of Professional Political Consultants (APPC) has today reaffirmed its support for the UK Public Affairs Council (UKPAC).

As a result of ongoing delays in the production of a common register of APPC, PRCA and CIPR members, and the unexpected resignation of the PRCA from UKPAC in early December, the APPC consulted with its member firms on the most appropriate way forward. Of the 35 members who responded, 33 agreed that it was vitally important for the APPC to continue to support UKPAC in the short‐term, as it works with a new provider to develop a system of registration which can act as a suitable model for Government.

APPC Chair, Helen Johnson, said: "We have been extremely disappointed and frustrated at UKPAC’s inability to deliver an accurate functioning register up to this point in time. However, we believe that all of us, including the Government, stand to learn much from UKPAC’s experience in delivering a common register if it can do so in time for that experience to be considered in the debate over statutory registration. We have therefore agreed to continue our support for UKPAC in the short‐term, subject to its delivering a complete, up‐to‐date, accurate and searchable register during the early stages of the Government’s consultation on a statutory register. We will keep the situation under close review."

10 January 2012

Notes:

The APPC has set out the following conditions on its continuing support for UKPAC:

  1. A complete, up‐to‐date, accurate and searchable register must be delivered and made available online as soon as reasonably practicable and certainly in time for the Government to be able to take account of UKPAC’s experience in reaching its final conclusions on a statutory register. This is likely to mean UKPAC delivering the register preferably by the end of January 2012, but by the end of February 2012 at the absolute latest.
  2. There must be no more false launches of the UKPAC register; all stakeholders must have absolute confidence that whatever goes live is 100% complete, accurate and error‐free.
  3. The APPC will keep the situation under review and will revisit the position in June or as soon as the Government’s plans for delivering the statutory register become clear, whichever is the sooner.
